The world’s biggest women’s football tournament could take place in the capital, Rome, after the Italian authorities signed a deal to host the 2022 event.
The deal will see the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) take over hosting duties from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2019, and the International Federation of Athletics Federations (IFAF) will take over the 2024 tournament, which is scheduled to take place from August to September.
“The new Rome International Olympic Stadium will be one of the most beautiful venues in the world,” said the FIGC president, Federico Fazio.
“It will be the most attractive venue for the sport and will be an ideal venue for many sports.”
“In the future, the future of women’s sport is looking bright and we are ready to take it to the next level.”
The FIFA World Cup, to be held in Russia in 2018, was hosted in Melbourne from 2006 to 2009.
The 2022 event, due to take on a more sporting theme, will also include an exhibition match between the United States and Germany.
The Italian capital has hosted the 2018 World Cup and hosted the 2014 World Cup.
